“Ma drink your prune juice!” I smile when I hear that line from a film that I watched recently, and some of you film buffs might well be able to tell me the name of the film. Although usually the subject of poking fun at, in reality it is actually a wise move. I’ll tell you why later.

We’ve all heard of antioxidants, but what exactly are they, and how important are they?

I’ll answer that question in a roundabout manner. The cells in our bodies need a constant flow of oxygen to extract energy from food during digestion, and we have seen in earlier posts how the lack of oxygen, leads a cell to turn to the process of using sugar (glycolysis), to create energy thus becoming a cancer cell.

The process of using oxygen to create energy creates unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules which are unstable because they contain and unpaired electron. Electrons prefer to be in a paired state, so the free radical molecule goes looking for an electron to steal. This sets off a chain reaction, which creates more free radicals. When a molecule loses an electron under these circumstances it is said to be oxidised.

Normally this situation is kept under control by the body’s immune system, as only a small amount of free radicals are created. However, with today’s environmental issues, pollutants, toxins and other factors, including cigarette smoke, and even x-rays, these all trigger the production of much higher levels of free radicals in our bodies.

When our immune system can no longer cope, we start to develop cancer.

So why do people develop cancer more often when they get older?

The answer is simply as we get older our immune system declines with age, so it becomes even more important to look after your health and be aware of the needs of your immune system.

Getting back to our original question, antioxidants are simply molecules with an extra electron that can give that electron to free radicals, neutralising them. Therefore an effective antioxidant strategy is something everyone should be seriously considering, especially in early adult life. For us older folks it’s a matter of survival if we fail to do anything about it.

Antioxidants work across a range of problems, not only preventing cancer, but also helping prevent heart disease for example by hindering the oxidation of harmful cholesterol, (the oxidised cholesterol that damages arteries).

Remember that prune juice? Its a natural cancer treatment, although people tend to think of it first as a laxative. Research has been conducted into antioxidant levels in foods, and the results have been tabled by a classification known as ORAC (the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity score).

Top of this list is prunes followed by raisins, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, plums and oranges. So the comical dig at prune juice not that funny after all. Drinking prune juice is actually a sound antioxidant investment. The next most delicious fruit is strawberries which are probably more of a favourite to most people than prunes.

Unfortunately a lot of micro organisms and pathogens can get into our drinking water, and that drinking water quality depends largely on where in the world you are. Some of the major countries use chlorine in the water supplies, and probably like me you have been led to believe that this is for your benefit.

This is only true to a certain extent. Chlorine is really bleach. Okay, the amount of chlorine that goes in to your water is relatively small, but you are still drinking bleach.

I believe it was the US Council Of Environmental Quality which stated, “Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.” A Doctor Joseph Price in his book published in the 1960s, concluded that the basic cause of heart attacks, stroke and arterial sclerosis is chlorine. He ran a study with chickens, where he raised a group that was given chlorine in the water, and another group, which wasn’t.

The group that were given chlorinated water as they grew, when autopsied, in every specimen showed some degree of heart or circulatory disease. The group raised without chlorinated water, showed no signs of disease and were healthier and larger specimens.

So why does chlorine cause damage?

The chlorine combines with natural compounds in the water to form chlorination by-products called trihalomethanes or THMs for short. Trihalomethanes cause free radicals to be produced in the body, and of course as you already know free radicals cause cell damage and are heavily carcinogenic.

Chlorine has been linked to breast cancer. A study in Hartford Connecticut, North America revealed that women with breast cancer had 50% to 60% higher levels of chlorination by-products in their breast tissue than women who did not suffer from breast cancer.

And here’s a frightener. It is believed that up to two thirds of our exposure to chlorine is through the inhalation of steam and by skin absorption when showering, due to temperature opening pores in the skin.

Why?

Apparently because chlorine and other contaminants vaporise much faster than water which means we can end up with as much as 50 times higher concentration of chlorine in the steam. Chlorine gas is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, (think of chloroform).

Did you know that the lower rates of cancer in France are not only contributed to the health benefits of red wine, but also the fact that they do not chlorinate their water? They ozonate their water to purify it instead.

So why is chlorine in water, if it is so dangerous?

Unfortunately, adding chlorine to water is a very cheap way to achieve the destruction of harmful pathogens and micro organisms. It is also a fairly easy process to add chlorine to water.

So how do we deal with this source of cancer?

Install a shower filter to declorinate your water, and/or install a good quality water filter to your main water supply to remove the chlorine at source.

The evidence would seem to suggest that this extra expense is an extremely sensible move to protect your family and your health.

We have seen how the lack of oxidation in the cells leads to cells turning cancerous as oxygen levels reduce. Research has shown that cells ultimately become cancerous when there is a reduction in the oxygen level in cells of 35% or more.

A biochemist and physicist at Gungnir Research in Portsmouth, Ohio, J.B. Kizer working on Warburg’s discovery found that high oxygen tensions were lethal to cancer tissue. A level of 95% was very toxic to cancerous cells where normal cells were not harmed. This seems to show that taking steps to get oxygen into cancerous tissues commenced a process where the cancerous cells begin to die. Additionally the process of fermentation used by cancer cells to make energy suppresses the oxygen intake of surrounding normal cells.

(Poor oxygen level in the cells, as seen in a previous post may be due to an overload of toxins, creating conditions in the cells, preventing proper levels of nutrients and oxygen from entering). Indeed, the cell wall may be deteriorated, again and making it more difficult for oxygen to enter.

Implications of these findings suggest that an effective natural cancer treatment would be to get as much oxygen into the cells as possible raising the oxygen levels and preventing the cells from turning cancerous.

Unfortunately, the process of getting additional oxygen into cells is not straightforward. Breathing in oxygen is limited by the amount of haemoglobin in the blood, and the pH level of your blood also is a factor. In other words, if you’re anaemic, less oxygen is likely to enter the cells. Most liquid oxygen supplements only release oxygen into the blood. There is no guarantee with these supplements that the oxygen reaches the cells.

So how do we approach this problem?

The first step is basically a detoxification of the body. There is plenty of research to show that cancer thrives in an acidic environment, and doesn’t survive in a more alkaline environment. When cells turn cancerous, they produce lactic acid as a waste product, and of course this makes the body more acidic.

So the first thing we should do is concentrate on returning the body to a less acidic state to give the body the best possible chance to commence recovery.

Most foods and drinks we eat today are acidic. Meat, grains, sugar and some other soft drinks are highly acidic. So if your diet has been lacking in natural fresh fruit and vegetables, your body is likely to be more acidic than it should have been for several years. Acidity is also a factor in many other degenerative diseases. Common sense says, to balance the acidity levels, so everything can come back to normal.

You see your body actually tries to maintain its pH level by trying to get rid of the excess acidic toxins. Where do they go? Some are excreted, but most are stored in the body’s cells, which leads to the cells problem in the first place. The more acidic your cells are, the less then can absorb vital oxygen.

So concentrate on your diet, eat more fresh fruit and vegetables with high levels of antioxidants, and consider using a natural detoxifier.

Ever heard of Zeolite? Zeolite is a natural volcanic mineral with some remarkable properties. It has a cage like molecular structure, which naturally attracts positively charged toxins.
