Hair transplants and cosmetic surgery are becoming more commonplace as procedures improve. In fact you would be hard pressed now to spot somebody who has undergone a hair transplanting procedure, however there are still some things you should know about hair transplants.

1. Over 50% of men over the age of 50 are dealing with some degree of hair loss. Some men have adopted the solution of shaving their heads, and the solution has been made fashionable by sports celebrities and film stars such as Patrick Stewart in ‘Star Trek the Next Generation’. Others opt for hair transplant surgery.

2. Hair transplants are permanent, so if you later decide that you do not like the result, you have to undergo further extensive surgery to try and correct or reverse the transplanting. Your head may never look the same again. One thing you should never do is accept an offer to do a few hair grafts and see how you like it before completing the full surgery. It’s all or nothing.

3. After undergoing hair transplant surgery you need a least one week of rest. While an operation is straight forward, your scalp is covered in minor wounds which need to be protected and allowed to heal before you resume your regular activities.

4. Most people think it’s a one or two hour operation and there are going to have a new head of hair, not so. Hair transplant procedures are both time consuming and involve a commitment to ongoing surgical grafting operations which can take over a year assuming everything goes according to plan and you suffer no outbreaks of infection. Trying to do the operations in mega-sessions where thousands of grafts are done in one sitting is gruelling for both the patient and the surgeon.

5. If you don’t have enough hair it is impossible for you to have normal hair transplant surgery. The hair transplant surgery has to be combined with other procedures, which unfortunately are generally more painful.

6. Here’s another kicker. Surgeons are generally reluctant to divulge that your hair transplant grafts may not survive after hair transplant surgery. It’s quite probable you will lose some grafts, but hopefully not enough to affect the overall result. This is generally what happens. Of course there are always exceptions and you might just be one of the very few for whom the procedure is far from successful.

7. Now for some good news. The actual cost of hair transplant treatments is not quite as expensive as you may think. You could reasonably expect to pay $14-$16000 on a hair transplant. Some people currently spends $30 to $40 per month on supposedly low cost treatments for hair loss, and depending on your actual age, might just be cheaper to seriously consider an early hair transplant.

It might be something worthy to consider, but seriously examine the positives and negatives, seek sound advice, and speak with people who have had the procedure done before finally making up your mind.

sperm graphic

A recent study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health has shown that men, who regularly eat Soya, have significantly fewer sperm than men who regularly eat meat.

The study was conducted over a period of three months and that was found that men who ate the equivalent of half a Soya burger each day recorded a 40% less sperm count than those who were on a meat diet.

The theory behind the reduction is that isoflavones from the Soya interfere with the hormones that control sperm production. Further testing will have to be done to see if a high Soya diet could lead to infertility, but meanwhile if you eat Soya, don’t get overconfident and relax your other contraception methods.

On the other hand if you are trying for a family don’t eat Soya.
