Generic Flomax Medication

Flomax is prescribed for symptoms of a clinical condition called pro-static hyperplasia. This is a condition in men usually of middle age where the prostate which is the size of walnut, and which surrounds the urethra, (the duct running from the bladder to the penis), becomes enlarged restricting the flow of urine. This condition causes pain during urination caused by the lessening of the urine flow and can lead to a sufferer requiring to urinate more frequently.

Generic Flomax does not actually help reduce the enlargement of the prostate, but acts on the surrounding muscles, by relaxing them by increasing blood flow, allowing the sufferer to urinate more comfortably.

Ingredients

The drug is orally administered and it usually comes in capsules containing 0.4 mg of tamsulosin hydrochloride, (the active ingredient), methacrylic acid copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, calcium stearate, polysorbate 80, triacetin, sodium lauryl sulphate, talc, titanium dioxide, FD&C Blue No. 2, gelatin, ferric oxide, with trace levels of industrial methylated spirit 74 OP, black iron oxide E172, dimethylpolysiloxane, propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, shellac, and n-butyl alcohol.

Flomax Precautions

Before taking Flomax, seek the advice of your GP if you’re taking any of the following medications:

* Cyclosporine
* metronidazole
* Cimetidine
* warfarin
* metronidazole
* clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, azithromycin, or ciprofloxacin (antibiotics).
* AIDS / HIV medication like indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, or saquinavir
* blood pressure or heart medication like diltiazem, or verapamil
* antidepressants like citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, or sertraline

Should your condition be such that it is a necessary part of your treatment, then it may just be a case of reduced dosage of the drug combined with close monitoring that will be necessary. There may be other medications which will also affect the drug adversely. As a precaution medication that you are currently taking should be disclosed to your doctor (including over-the-counter medications such as cough mixtures and herbal products, vitamins and minerals), so potential conflicts with Flomax medication may be avoided, or at least minimised.

Adverse reactions and Flomax side effects

Two unwelcome drug reactions for generic Flomax have been observed:

* Immunologic Reaction: This drug has sulfa moiety, causing it to have typical reactions with sulfa drugs
* Ophthalmologic Reaction: An increased eye irritation when using contact lenses, and a future complication to possible eye surgery involved in a condition known as floppy iris syndrome which may render the eye surgery largely ineffective.
