My wife was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a few years ago and our lives were changed forever. I am developing an online community for people suffering from fibromyalgia. The online community, “You're Not Alone” ( http://fibromyalgia.ning.com ), will allow members to participate in fibromyalgia-related discussions in the Forum, share their thoughts and ideas in their blog, and post their personal photos and videos. There is no cost to join. Members of the site follow a simple process to create their profile page, which they can later customize including a profile photo and additional details about themselves. I created the project while participating in a Landmark Education leadership program. Part of the coursework was to create a project that benefits the community. When I had the opportunity to create a project that would make a difference in the community, it was only natural that my wife's illness would be the inspiration.

Hello,

I have a friend who helps people with fibromyalgia become completely pain free. One woman with excruciating pain had had it for 10 years. She is now pain free.

He uses hypnotherapy and therein lies the problem - people have preconceived notions about what hypnosis is because of stage tricks and are reluctant to try this method. They are afraid that it is a scam etc.

People who have fibromyalgia are also used to false promises and they are extremely skeptical. They are insulted with the suggestion that the problem's cause is rooted in the mind even though the power of the mind is quite clear and readily accepted in the case of an ulcer or diverticulitis. Many will not even listen to information about an alternative therapy. They become convinced that there is no hope or that they know it all.

Science has documented many instances where the mind can influence the body - witness placebo effect, walking on coals and voluntary lowering of body temperature.

I read a study just the other day that discussed the wretched state of neurons in the skin of people with fibromyalgia. There is no doubt that there are very real physical symptoms with this condition. It is these physical symptoms that drugs, nutrition, acupuncture, massage etc. alleviate. They do not work completely because they do not address the cause. Hypnotic regression back to the cause does address this.

The same study (that involved the skin neurons) also found that patients who went through cognitive behavioral therapy found greater relief than those who did not. The study highly recommended CBT. Sounds as though there is some mind -body recognition here.

Anyway, I am writing this because it seems tremendously tragic to see so much suffering that could be helped without drugs or any long term therapy because of a prevailing attitude which maintains that there is no cure or that it is not in the mind or that hypnosis is a trick. Please note: there is no long term help through hypnosis that only plants a suggestion that you are not in pain. The person must be regressed to the cause.

I hope this opens some minds and that many people will be saved from pain.

Lori
