I cant sleep at night is a common complaint which seems to become more common as you get older. One of the key ingredients in getting a good nights sleep is exercise. Of course as you get older you tend to exercise less. It is a fact however, that you are more likely to sleep better at night if you have been active throughout the day.
People who cant sleep at night will generally notice an improvement in the quality of sleep with a little regular exercise. Also a little exercise or some form of physical activity helps deal with the stress and worry you may face in your daily life. You’ll also notice it will be easier to relax and fall asleep rather than spend time thinking and worrying.
Research confirms that there is a direct correlation between exercise and sleep. I don’t mean you have to go out and run 5 miles, or take up jogging. If you simply walk a little more you will find a difference in your well-being. If you cant sleep at night the chances are you’re not as active as you should be.
What were simply trying to do is to drain off some of the energy that is keeping you awake at night. Although your body does need a certain amount of physical activity for healthy functioning, you should not exercise in the evenings four or five hours before you actually intend to go to bed. You need this time for your body to be relaxing and winding down after the day.
Naturally it follows on that the best time to exercise is in the afternoon or the early evening time preferably no later than 7 p.m. Best advice seems to be to exercise three or four times a week for about 30 minutes even if it’s just taking a walk. If you have a dog it will appreciate the extra walks.
Another factor which can cause a loss of sleep is intense mental activity before retiring. If you’re spending time on the computer every evening either working or perhaps playing a computer game such as World War Craft, then your mind is still active when it comes time to sleep. It takes a few hours for your mind to settle down again. In the few hours before sleep you should be relaxing and perhaps just reading a book.
Think back to your school days and you will remember that if you were facing an exam the next day you usually didn’t sleep too well the night before because your mind was continually thinking of the exam to come.
Some other suggestions to get rid of your cant sleep at night problem is perhaps to try Yoga which helps utilise breathing techniques and postures to increase blood circulation, or Tai Chi, the Chinese art of breathing and movement.
There are also a number of natural remedies in the form of herbal supplements which can be most effective if you want to avoid a glass of red wine approach that some people take to help wind down in the evenings. A glass of red wine every day can be beneficial, but of course the temptation is always there to overdo it. A dull head last thing at night won’t help you sleep.
